El Jazz Mexicano De Tino Contreras

CD (Item 589576) Jazzman (UK), Late 60s — Condition: New Copy

Mindblowing music from Mexican drummer Tino Contreras – a cat who works in a very unique blend of jazz and Latin styles! The tunes here go way way past the obvious – and do start out with a bit of New York and Cuban energy, yet quickly take off into wonderfully unusual territory that's all Tino's own – hints of exotica in the instrumentation, unusual inflections in the arrangements, and complicated drum parts that go way past just Latin dancefloor modes! The blend is amazing – unlike any other localized Latin styles of the 60s, and very much in the jazz mode promised in the title – yet also so heavenly and haunting, it also goes way past standard jazz too. With a collection like this, Contreras may finally get the credit due him as a unique musical visionary – an artist we might well rank up there with Mulatu, Salah Ragab, or a rare few other cross-cultural creators! Titles include "Ravi Shankar", "Orbita", "Santo", "La Malaguena", "Orfeo En Los Tambores", "Kyrie", "Visnu", "Jazz En El Cairo", and "Credo".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
