Mid 80s magic from the Temptations – a record that shouldn't be as great as it is, given the lame title and cover image – but which still has the group working at a top level! There's a lot of strong generational interplay here between the talents of Otis Williams and Ali-Ollie Woodson – both of whom pen and arrange a good number of the tracks on the set. And the modes here are a nice mix of generations too – music that's got the smoother, more modern touches you'd guess from the date of the record – but which still steps out with the deeper vocal level you'd expect from the Temps! Titles include "Magic", "Don't Break Your Promise To Me", "She Got Tired Of Loving Me", "Oh Lover", "Touch Me", and "Givehersomeattention". Fantasy, 1979. Very Good Gatefold
A wonderful album from Pleasure – a group who were already great before, but who really seem to hit a great new level with this late 70s classic! Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling ... LP, Vinyl record album
Oh Girl
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
Wicked electric funk from Young Holt Unlimited – and a real departure from the sound of their 60s albums, and a step into a groove that's very 70s-styled overall! The album's heavy on Fender Rhodes – played not just by group member Ken Chaney, but also by a young Bobby Lyle – ... LP, Vinyl record album
