One of the best albums that Lou cut with the HB Barnum/David Axelrod team! The record's not as funky, so much as it's a wonderfully conceived batch of tunes that has Lou singing in that super-hip pop soul mode that blasted him onto the charts back in the old days. Side two features a killer batch of songs and monologues that run together – including "Old Man's Memories", about a guy sitting on a bench in Washington Park on the south side of Chicago, which then rolls into an amazing version of "It Was A Very Good Year". Other tunes have a great mix of soul and jazz – and titles include "Love Is A Hurtin Thing", "A Whole Lotta Woman", "Don't Explain", "Old Folks", and "Breaking My Back (Instead Of Using My Mind)". (Rainbow label pressing – in great shape!)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
Wicked electric funk from Young Holt Unlimited – and a real departure from the sound of their 60s albums, and a step into a groove that's very 70s-styled overall! Polydor, 1973. Near Mint-
Seminal early funk work from Roy Ayers! The record catches him at that perfect point when he was turning from a straight jazz player into a sinister force in 70s funk – and the group on the session includes super-hip soul jazz giants like Charles Tolliver, Sonny Fortune, and Harry Whitaker, ...
