One of the most striking records so far from the mighty Rob Mazurek – a set that makes us more than glad we've been following his musical journey for the past two decades! The set's got a nicely compressed feel – one that takes some of the looser energy that's been bubbling up in recent Mazurek records, and delivers it in a tight quartet format – with Rob's sparkling cornet in the lead, amidst great piano from Angelica Sanchez, bass from Matt Lux, and drums from John Herndon! Given the wide resumes of all players, there's a really shifting sense of sound here – one that's bold one minute, introspective the next – and never falls into too-familiar jazz phrasing modes. Yet Mazurek's also really matured as a player, too – working here with a sensitivity we never would have expected years ago – captured with great clarity in the recording. Titles include "Magic Saturn", "Twister Uranus", "Spanish Venus", "Folk Song Neptune", "Primitvie Jupiter" and "Spiral Mercury".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Pacific Jazz/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1963. New Copy
A stellar set from one of the most underrated reed players of all time – a brilliant bit of searching soul jazz, cut at a time when Curtis Amy was leaving behind his Texas roots for the new sounds of the Coltrane generation! The album's quite different than the organ and tenor dates that Amy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rarely are such "meeting of the minds" sessions worth any fuss at all – but in this case, the masterful talents of the players turn what should be a snoozy "common denominator" session into a modernist classic that still crackles with excitement after all these years! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

The lost fourth album from Cortex – recorded near the end of the 70s, but still with a groove that's heavy on Fender Rhodes! The record's really just the effort of keyboardist Alain Mion – who also uses lots of moog, Hammond, and other keyboards too – and sings lyrics on most ... LP, Vinyl record album

Trad Vibe (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A lost later slice of work from Cortex – a bit tighter than some of the group's previous albums, but equally funky overall! There's a bit less jamming here than before, the Cortex have definitely developed an ear for the dancefloor – a jazzy funk style that would be perfect in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

A monster! This is one of the rare few albums that tenorist Harold Vick ever cut as a leader – and it's pretty darn great all the way through! A fantastic mid 60s album from Grant Green – but one that never got its due originally, because it was unreleased at the time – and didn't come out until a Japanese version in the late 70s! The album's only got two long tracks – but both of them are more than enough to make it great! "Kalabuley Woman" takes up all of side one – and the tune's got this wickedly dubby approach to funk – almost like Cymande at the start, but then filled up with all these ... LP, Vinyl record album
