Velvet Songs – To Baba Fred Anderson
CD (Item 595063) Rogue Art (France), 2011 — Condition: New Copy
A great performance by the Chicago trio of Ernest Dawkins on reeds, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – dedicated to their late scene-mate Fred Anderson, and played with an open, exploratory sound that Anderson would have loved! At times, there's a very unstructured quality to the recording – the most unfettered approach forged by the AACM – with Dawkins especially stretching out, on soprano, alto, or tenor sax. At other points, though, Bankhead's wonderful basslines pull things in, and give them a soulful solidity that underscores the spiritual elements of the music – that element in his sound we always appreciate, and which seems to bring Drake's percussion strongly into focus too – creating a groove that's almost like the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble at times.
