An even hipper volume than the Contemporary Funk collection from the folks at Tramp Records – and a mighty testament to the mindblowing jazz coming out of the global underground in recent years! Not long ago, if contemporary combos played older jazz modes, they'd usually head for straight soul jazz of the organ/tenor variety, of familiar funk from the 70s CTI scene. But here, the groups are touching on a wide range of really wonderful music – bits of spiritual jazz and more complicated elements, kind of a post-Coltrane style that's really brilliant, and carried off with some of the best traces of the Impulse Records generation! Some of the names are familiar, but others are new to us – and together, the tracks on the collection work together wonderfully well – a truly illuminating batch of music that's a lot deeper than you might expect.
