Die Neunte Von United/X
CD (Item 536147) Inakustik (Germany), 1996/1999 — Condition: New Copy
Later work by this European jazz supergroup – two 90s albums in a single package! First up is Die Neunte Von United – a set that features some tight grooving from an ensemble that includes Kenny Wheeler, Ack Van Rooyen, and Ian Carr on trumpets, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and Barbara Thompson on tenor – all working together as a mighty strong horn section – with support from Wolfgang Dauner on piano, and Volker Kriegel on guitar! Kriegel's sound is definitely a lot cleaner here than in the early days, and it really helps shape the feel of the record – bringing in a mix of bluesy and fusiony undertones. Titles include "Double Bind", "The Worm's Turn", "Postcard For FW Bernstein", and "Elongate". X is most likely the group's 10th album, but it's got a great sound that goes right back to their start – sort of an 80s update of earlier German fusion modes – with just the right balance of jamming solos and tight rhythms. Players inlcude Ian Carr and Ack Van Rooyen on trumpets, Barbara Thompson and Christof Lauer on saxes, and Wolfgang Dauner on piano – and titles include "United Funk", "Flying Carpets", "SWR 2", "Thompson's Tango", and "Burn Up". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
