A compelling look at the Something Else label – put together by Japanese DJ Hiroko Otsuka! Something Else was kind of like a Japanese arm of Blue Note back in the 90s – a label that recorded some excellent contemporary material, much of which also came out here, too – usually freshly modern jazz from some of the generation's most accomplished players – both American and Japanese! Over the years, the material's become quite overlooked, and is ripe for rediscovery now – as there's some real killers in the catalog, as you'll hear on this sweet little collection! The sound is more complex than just jazz funk, modal, or fusion – but most of the cuts also have a groove of their own, too – but in ways that go past the usual Blue Note bag.
