Beautifully-recorded work from Mohamed Ilyas -- the "Voice Of Zanzibar", and a singer who also accompanies himself on violin! The music here has a very unique sort of feel -- hits of Arabic roots, but taken in a new direction -- one that blends together a range of violins, oud, and percussion -- a sound that's full, but never too polished or sentimental -- and cut through nicely by Ilyas' richly expressive vocals. The percussion creates an earthy feel next to the more exotic lines of the strings -- and the whole album's got an off-kilter sound that almost reminds us of some of the work in the Ethiopiques series.
