The start of a legend – the first two albums from The Pretty Things! First up is the self-titled set – rough-edged early work from The Pretty Things – a set that's got a much bluesier feel than their psychedelic work of a few years later, filled with influences from the Chicago and Memphis scenes! The grooves here are all pretty gritty – set up with jagged rhythms that feel like they're lifted from Bo Diddley and John Lee Hooker records – and played with instrumentation that's fairly similar too. A few points get a bit more rockish, but the music's strongly Brit blues overall – and even the vocals have a nice raspy feel overall. Titles include "Unknown Blues", "Big City", "13 Chester Street", "Don't Lie To Me", "The Moon Is Rising", and "Pretty Things". Features 6 bonus tracks – including "Get Yourself Home", "I Can Never Say", "Big Boss Man", and "Rosalyn". Get The Picture is a huge leap forward for The Pretty Things – a really dramatic move away from the rougher blues of their debut, into some very hip swinging London sounds of the 60s! There's still a gritty undercurrent here, but the music is much more British overall – a bit like the shift The Who made in their first few records, with some mod themes and instrumentation, but a lurking specter of older American work hiding in the background. The guitars and drums are plenty loud, and the album's got a really fierce kind of feel – a sinister edge that's totally great, and which shows that the group are a lot more powerful when speaking from their own point of view than that of a US bluesman. Titles include "Buzz The Jerk", "Get The Picture", "I Had A Dream", "I Want Your Love", "London Town", "Cry To Me", "Gonna Find A Substitute", and "Can't Stand The Pain".
