Nina Simone

LP (Item 44845) Up Front, Late 60s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

4.60 38

A nice little live set from Nina – offered up here with no dates or location notes, but sounding a lot like some of her best 60s live sets for the Coolpix label. Backing is by a small group, and although the sound quality is a bit echoey, the album has a dark quality that brings out the best in Nina's vocals. Titles include "Zungo", "One More Sunday In Savannah", "For All We Know", "Nobody", and "When I Was In My Prime". (Cover has some light wear, but looks nice overall.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Folksy Nina
Colpix, 1964. Near Mint-
A fitting title, as Nina's always mixed in a bit of folksy influences with her jazz – increasingly so at this point in her career, as she was opening up her bag a bit to include traditional songs of pride, protest, and despair. The album's a great precursor for her work on Philips a few ... LP, Vinyl record album

Let It All Out
Philips, 1965. Very Good-
Excellent Philips work by Nina – a set of tracks that mostly features spare combo backings from Rudy Stevenson on guitar and flute, Bobby Hamilton on drums, and Lisle Atkinson on bass. One track, "For Myself", features arrangements by Horace Ott – and another, "Images&quo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love Nest
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
One of the Hi Los dreamiest albums – a gentle batch of ballads and love tunes, conducted by Frank Comstock with a gentle, late nite approach. The style's not as dramatic or showy as some of the group's other albums of the time, but it does make for a really wonderful set – pillowy soft ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stars In Our Eyes
Capitol, 1961. Very Good+
A rare one from The Four Freshmen – an album that almost never turns up on anymore, and some of their best work of the 60s! The group's working in a tight jazzy mode – layering their harmonies with arrangements that are a bit more sophisticated than some of their earlier pop, but which ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1956. Very Good+
A very cool album from Noel Coward – a talent you're probably more familiar with as a playwright, but who also happens to be quite the entertainer! This album is one of two great sets that Coward recorded live in the US in the mid 50s, and they really show him opening up a lot from earlier ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
Dreamy harmony jazz from the great Hi-Los – one of the hippest groups of the 50s, with a sweet quartet approach similar to The Four Freshmen, and which had a huge effect on pop in the 60s! The tunes on the set feature the group working with Frank Comstock – in an amazing style that ... LP, Vinyl record album

God Bless The Child
Columbia, Late 30s/Early 40s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A classic 2LP collection of Billie's older work for Columbia – early sides produced by John Hammond in the late 30s and early 40s. Titles include "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie", "Am I Blue", "God Bless The Child", "Mandy Is Two", "It's The Same Old ... LP, Vinyl record album

Back To The World
Curtom, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Pure genius from Curtis Mayfield – and a record that's got all the righteousness and political power you might guess from the cover! The album burns with a sense of empowerment that's every bit the best strength of Curtom in the 70s – a sublime blend of heavy soul, funky undercurrents, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Open Sesame
De-Lite, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
A magic carpet ride of funky soul from Kool & The Gang – classic Open Sesame from '76 – one that took the group to a higher level! It's not as rawly funky as some of the group's earlier albums, but they do still bring it, just with a cooler spirtual vibe that we never expected ... LP, Vinyl record album

Instant Coffey
Sussex, 1974. Very Good+
Dennis Coffey albums are always great, but this one's especially good, and it's very very tough to find compared to the rest of them! There's two 7-minute long jamming cuts on here – "Moon Star" and "Outrageous (The Mind Excursion)" – which both have totally great ... LP, Vinyl record album
