A beautiful batch of gospel work from Shirley Ann Lee – a vocalist who originally worked the spiritual circuit in a trio with Candi Staton! The album's an unusual one – put together partly as a way of promoting Shirley's music to a larger audience – which means it's got a few spoken bits that kind of introduce her with cool musical backings, then roll into the songs themselves – which are often a very bluesy version of gospel – recorded with earthy instrumentation that really brings out the deep soul in her vocals! There's a nicely offbeat quality to the record – and in addition to 6 rare singles, the set also features 10 more that have never been issued before. Titles include "All I Have To Depend On", "There's A Light", "How Can I Lose", "Someday", "Stay On Your Knees", "Get Back", "I've Got To Make It", and "Blessed Quietness".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Numero, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
Otis Johnson may well be the Timmy Thomas of gospel music – as here, he's working with just spare organ lines and rhythm machine – in a way that gives most of these tracks the raw, personal feel of Timmy's classic "Why Can't We Live Together"! The overall sound is a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

The second album from Shuggie Otis – a wild and wooly batch of grooves that really stretches out the sound from the first! Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the most striking work we've heard from Neneh Cherry in years – and a great follow-up to her previous project with The Thing! This set has Neneh working with producer Kieran Hebden – who returns Cherry to the offbeat, arty sound of her early years on the British scene – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy
The title promises bongos, and the record definitely delivers – in a flurry of cuts that run the gamut from jazz, to Latin, to R&B! Percussion dominates most numbers – in a jukebox mambo mode that often has styles criss-crossing nicely in some Latin and Caribbean impulses – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Really soulful sounds from a set of unlikely sources – American grooves from the late 70s that weren't necessarily recorded as soul records – but which really fit in well with the best work of the time! The music here is from a host of obscure indie records – some funk, some jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Howlin Wolf Album
Cadet/Get On Down, 1968. New Copy (reissue)
A killer album of funky blues – recorded by Howlin Wolf during the period when Chess/Cadet was backing its older artists up with some of the newer funk musicians it had working in its studios! The overall sound works quite well – and although purists at the time moaned at the way ... LP, Vinyl record album
