Manumission – BBC Jazz For Moderns (10 inch EP)
LP (Item 518739) Gearbox (UK), 1962 — Condition: New Copy
One of the hippest sets we've ever heard from British reedman Don Rendell – and that's saying a lot, given some of his other records! The session's an unreleased date from the early 60s – and in addition to Rendell on tenor and soprano sax, the group also features a young Graham Bond on alto – playing in much more of a jazz-based way than on later recordings! The combination of reeds is amazing – in a space somewhere between Roland Kirk and Joe Harriott – with the swinging style of the Mercury albums by the former – and the rhythm section is wonderful, too – with Johnny Burch on piano, Tony Archer on bass, and Ted Pope on drums – all providing a solidly soulful undercurrent. The music is quite fresh and modern, but also has a nice sense of groove throughout – and the 10" album features three tracks – "Manumission", "Bring Back The Burch", and "Frankincense". (Limited edition of 500 copies – vinyl only!) © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
