A perfect bit of uncanny cultural exchange! In 2001 a Cuban ambassador visiting Senegal was blown away by the Afro-Cuban music he heard there. Shocked when he learned that they had never been to his island he initiated an official visit. Los Afro-Salseros de Senegal was the ad hoc combo assembled for the occasion featuring Senegal's greatest salseros, drawn from some of the country's most legendary bands – but here they play together as if they've worked with one another for decades. Singers Labal Sosseh, and Pepe Fall were members of the mighty Star Band, vocalist Mar Seck and guitarist Yahya Fall worked in Number 1 de Dakar, while avuncular tenor saxophonist Issa Cissokho is a charter member of Orchestra Baobab. The album was recorded in Havana's legendary Egrem studio on the 2001 visit, and while the song structures are pure Afro-Caribbean magic, the arresting vocals, the bubbling percussion, and the killer guitar work could've only come from Senegal.
