Buddy Bregman's doing the arrangements on this one – and he brings a great jazzy flair to the backings, helping Anita O'Day open up in her most dynamic mode! The whole set swings nicely, but without any sort of hoke – and Bregman manages to highlight specific instruments in the arrangements in different ways on each tune – creating a nice sense of variety that really keeps things fresh. Titles are mostly familiar numbers, but the match of Bregman and O'Day is more than enough to make them come alive anew – and tunes include "Man With A Horn", "Let's Begin", "I Never Had A Chance", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Don't Be That Way", and "I Won't Dance". (Verve Inc pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear, a split spine, and a split top seam.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Quite a popular live album from Ella – recorded in Berlin at the height of the cold war years – featuring a famous recording of "Mack The Knife" that almost blew away Bobby Darin's hit with the cut! An obscure little set – one of the few full albums issued by Chicago 60s soul powerhouse Constellation Records, and a nice batch of bluesy tunes from Jimmy Witherspoon, recorded with a group that features Groove Holmes on organ and Teddy Edwards on tenor. That's Paul Williams, lost amidst the whiteness of the cover – kind of fuzzy around the edges, just like the warm feelings in his music!
