One of Jackie McLean's earliest dates as a leader – a stone cooker that already shows an edge that sets him apart from other artists! The feel here is similar to McLean's albums for Prestige at the same time – a mixture of bop and some of the modernist themes that often surfaced in McLean's work, played in a seductively laidback manner, but with a razor-sharp intensity overall! Players include Donald Byrd on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, and Doug Watkins on bass – just the right sort of lineup to match the dark intensity of Jackie's music. Titles include "Mood Malody", "Lover Man", "Blue Doll", "It's You Or No One", and a key early take of "Little Melonae".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Prestige (Japan), 1957. New Copy
A really unique little session from Jackie McLean – and one of the few 50s jazz albums to feature the talents of tuba player Ray Draper, a vastly under-rated artist who recorded briefly with McLean and Coltrane at the time! Although the tuba might seem like a heavy instrument to bring into ... CD

Jackie McLean's got a great pal here – trumpeter Bill Hardman, who'd work with Jackie in the Jazz Messengers a year later! Here, the pals are cutting sharp lines in a perfect early hardbop mode – a great Prestige session with big bold sound from Rudy Van Gelder, and fresh modern tones ... CD

An incredible trio album – not just for the powerful drums of the great Elvin Jones, but also for amazing work on reeds by a young Joe Farrell! Farrell's in his pre-CTI years here, and really lets loose in the space of the album's open setting – a trio that just features Jones on drums ... CD

One of the most hard-hitting Jimmy McGriff albums of the 70s – a raw live date recorded in Newark – and a set that's a perfect bridge between the sharp soul of his Sue Records sessions and his later funk to come! The whole thing's got a gritty vibe the really recalls the sound of a ... CD

A late date for Brit bandleader Vic Lewis – but a great one too, thanks to a strong focus on the bossa nova sounds of the 60s! The mode's a real change for Lewis, who could sometimes be a bit stiff – and the new groove definitely opens things up nicely – as does the album's work ... CD
