Early 70s Afro Funk treasures by the Apostles on a stunning 45 – material mined in a joint effort by Academy & Voodoo Funk – both among of the most reverent and respectful diggers of rare African recordings around these days! The Apostles have a unique vibe of their own, though they carry the influences of, and a love for, the global funk and soul of their time. "Onye Akpa" pulls us right in with loose-limbed, yet walloping drums and a relentless rhythm. Punctuated with woozy organ and sweet guitar lines under shout soul vocals, this one kills all the way! "Oshi Onwu" on the other side is cut from the same sweaty cloth, begging you to shout along with the vocals and then slays you with a funky drum break and limber guitar solo. Top notch all the way down to the picture sleeve. Don't miss out!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Don't Commot Me/Obiara Wondo
Academy, Early 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)
We've never been commotted – so we're not sure what it means to "Don't Commot Me" – but we can say that the tune is a wickedly sharp bit of Afro Funk, complete with some very fast-riffing guitar! The instrument's a lot more tight than on some of the looser Afro numbers of the ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Uto Nwa/Osi Na Ngada
Academy/Voodoo Funk, Mid 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)
Breaking drums, popping organ, and fuzzy guitar – all exploding at the start of this rare funky nugget – and setting fire to the tune right from the beginning! There's a nervous, jumpy sort of energy to "Uto Nwa" – one that not only sets it apart from other Afro funk ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Voo Doo Mademoiselle/That's When I Need You
Pied Piper (UK), Late 60s. New Copy
Two rare stormers from Detroit! September Jones is a hell of a singer who only cut a handful of sides in the 60s – but she really sounds great here on this massive cut with Pied Piper production! Freddie Butler has a hell of a voice, and he swings a bit more than usual here in a similar ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Secret Stash, 2014. New Copy
A nicely brooding number from Wanda Davis – a slow stepper with a deep bluesy undercurrent that fits very nicely with Wanda's excellent vocals in the lead! The tune's contemporary, but it's got this really old school vibe that almost takes us back to Screamin Jay Hawkins in the 50s! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy (pic cover)
2 funky gems from the Bay Area scene – both issued on a limited edition funky 45! "Git Back" is a crackling bit of funk from Sugar Pie DeSanto – a singer we know more for her straighter soul on Chess, but who steps out here with a massive deep funk diva approach – ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Costanza/Hip Shot
Hip, 2013. New Copy
Not the "Costanza" you might know from Seinfeld, but a tight funky number from the excellent Georgia Soul Council! The tune's got fast drums mixed with lots of Hammond riffing and tight horns – and the whole group shouts a catchy vocal bit at a few key spots. "Hip Shot" ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
