What Am I Here For?
CD (Item 610888) Spotlite (UK), 1993/1996 — Condition: New Copy
Hard-burning later work from British reedman Don Rendell – two dates recorded in the early 90s, both of which show Rendell as confident and sharp-edged as in the early days! There's a bit less of the modernism that marked his 60s or 70s sessions, but in its place is a great ear for solid, hardbop-directed jazz – a way of opening up on his horns, especially tenor sax – although Don also plays some nice alto, flute, and clarinet as well. The first date features Steve Waterman on trumpet, Chris Kibble on piano, and a bit of guest vocals from Christine Tobin on two tracks – and the second set features Art Themen on soprano and tenor too, plus Nick Weldon on piano. Titles inlcude "Lament", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "For Minors Only", "Shades Of Blue", "The Bluesroom", "This I Dig Of You", and "Antibes". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
