Damn, Jimmy's always great! Even in a session like this – the kind of obscure, almost "off the books" sort of album, Jimmy's still giving 110% on the Hammond – grooving with an unnamed group in a mode that recalls the fiercely swinging sound of Groove Holmes at his best in the mid 60s. Like Holmes, McGriff has a real talent for taking familiar numbers – like "The Way You Look Tonight", "Laura", and "Moon River" – and making them swing with a very soulful edge! Even better, though, is the original cut "Once Again", a nice groover that recalls Jimmy's days at Sue! (Cover has a cut corner & some light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Double-length work from Jimmy McGriff – 2 albums in 1 from the Groove Merchant label! The first half of the set features the album Fly Dude – some great down-home work from Jimmy McGriff, and a session that's a bit less funk-based than some of his others for the Groove Merchant label, ... Let's Stay Together
Groove Merchant, 1972. Very Good+
An early 70s gem from Jimmy McGriff! Jimmy's grooving with a larger group here – but in a funky 70s mode that makes for a great update of the rawer sound he laid out on some of his Sue sides in the 60s. The best tracks are the covers of 70s soul material – like "Shaft", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Funky flute work from the great Jeremy Steig! The album's one of his best-ever – and it features the growling "Howling For Judy", a non-stop modal flute number that's been sampled to great fame by the Beastie Boys, and which you'll recognize immediately from the breathy rumbling ... Argo, 1963. Very Good
Groovy little record that has this funky tenor giant playing a bunch of tracks with a Frenchy feel to them. Budd's joined by Hank Jones on piano, plus Kenny Burrell on guitar, and a nice Latin rhythm section that includes Joe Venuto on vibes and marimba and Willie Rodriguez on percussion. The ... Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! Erotic Moods
Paul Winley, Early 70s/1978. Near Mint-
Wild and mysterious stuff! This album is sort of a repackaged version of the legendary Harlem Underground album – a great lost funk album from the mid-70s that listed George Benson as a player in the group, but one that Benson claims that he never played on!
