Damn, Jimmy's always great! Even in a session like this – the kind of obscure, almost "off the books" sort of album, Jimmy's still giving 110% on the Hammond – grooving with an unnamed group in a mode that recalls the fiercely swinging sound of Groove Holmes at his best in the mid 60s. Like Holmes, McGriff has a real talent for taking familiar numbers – like "The Way You Look Tonight", "Laura", and "Moon River" – and making them swing with a very soulful edge! Even better, though, is the original cut "Once Again", a nice groover that recalls Jimmy's days at Sue! (Cover has some wear, wrinkling, and staining, with some splitting on the top and bottom seams and a peeled mark from sticker removal.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Let's Stay Together
Groove Merchant, 1972. Very Good+
An early 70s gem from Jimmy McGriff! Jimmy's grooving with a larger group here – but in a funky 70s mode that makes for a great update of the rawer sound he laid out on some of his Sue sides in the 60s. The best tracks are the covers of 70s soul material – like "Shaft", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Sugar
Capitol, 1971. Good+
A fantastic album, and one of Jimmy's hardest to find! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy's other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7" singles than any of Jimmy's straighter soul jazz work. It almost sounds like The JBs are backing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solid State, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Two side-long jam sessions – on "Straight No Chaser" and "Satin Doll" – played by Bobby Bryant on trumpet, Pete Christlieb on tenor, Harry Edison on trumpet, Harold Land on tenor, Carl Fontana and Frank Rosolino on trombones, Tommy Flanagan and Jimmy Rowles on piano, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Legwork
Solid State, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Funky flute work from the great Jeremy Steig! The album's one of his best-ever – and it features the growling "Howling For Judy", a non-stop modal flute number that's been sampled to great fame by the Beastie Boys, and which you'll recognize immediately from the breathy rumbling ... French Cookin'
Argo, 1963. Very Good
Groovy little record that has this funky tenor giant playing a bunch of tracks with a Frenchy feel to them. Budd's joined by Hank Jones on piano, plus Kenny Burrell on guitar, and a nice Latin rhythm section that includes Joe Venuto on vibes and marimba and Willie Rodriguez on percussion. The ...
