John Coltrane — Crescent (180 gram pressing) ... LP 16.99

Sharp-edged John Coltrane at his best – a record that we'd rank right up there with Love Supreme, and which is a key transition point in Coltrane's musical ideas! There's a very strong edge to Coltrane's tone here – and even on the mellower ballads, he plays with a sound not always heard before – a quality that's bristlingly modern, and which really opens up on some of the longer numbers on the set. Rhythm is by the classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones – and the sound is always pushing the boundaries towards new ideas, but always keeps nicely inside throughout! Titles include "Crescent", "Wise One", "Lonnie's Lament", and "The Drum Thing". (Out of print first pressing.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Brilliant work from Coltrane – recorded in the 60s, but not issued until the late 70s, and only then, not properly in print until the release of this great package! The material is classic Coltrane Quartet sessions – with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones working with Trane ... CD

Awakening
Impulse, 1970. Used
Pre-electric Jamal, but with the spiralling spiritual lyricism that he would later bring to his Fender Rhodes recordings. Tracks are very open-ended – a continuing growth of the lyrical exploration he first forged in the late 50s, expanding out to embrace the new freedom of the 70s, but ... CD
