Noah Found Grace – Jamaican Gospel Vol 1

LP (Item 625525) Social, 1960s/1970s — Condition: New Copy

A great look at a virtually undiscovered genre – Jamaican gospel recordings from the 60s and 70s – most of which have the same soulful undercurrents as mainstream sounds from Kingston at the time! As with rocksteady and reggae, there's clearly an American influence at play here – especially in the southern group gospel mode, handled here with even rougher recording quality than you'd find from US indie recordings of the time. At points, there's almost a slight undercurrent of Jamaican rhythms – not really reggae, but a light lilting in the background, which really helps set these tracks apart from American recordings – and, given the acoustic instrumentation, almost give them a folksy feel at points. Titles include "All My Days Are Numbered" by Glen Francis, "Since I Get Inside The Gate" by Joan Creary, "Something's Got A Hold On Me" by Audrey Williams & The Joybells, "The Comforter Has Come" by Alton & Otis, "Bright Blue Galilee" by Stafford Coombs, and "The Alphabet" by Astley Dixson. (Comes in a cool paste-on art sleeve.)  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
