Great tenor sounds from Wayne Escoffery – set to an excellent groove that mixes Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano! The album's one of the best we've heard from Escoffery in years – a date that really sets his horn free, yet also has a soulful focus, too – one that definitely comes from the Rhodes, handled by Orrin Evans, plus more keyboards from Adam Holzman. Basslines – from Hans Glawischnig and Ricky Rodrigues – are nice and warm, and often quite mellow – and Jason Brown's drums have this subtle approach that really lets the tenor and keyboards take the lead. Titles include "World Of The Bardo", "Banishment Of The Lost Spirit", "If I Am Who You Are", "Selena's Song", and "Presumed Innocence" – plus "Two Souls", which features Escoffery on soprano, blowing spontaneously alongside acoustic piano from Evans.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The cover's a bit cheesy, but the sound is right on the money – very much in the best spirit of Pieces Of A Dream that we've loved all these years – and not far at all from the group's great roots! The jazz is smooth and soulful – with loads of great keyboards from Curtis Harmon, ... CD

Soaring spiritual soul jazz from the LA scene – a CD that features a beautiful performance by the Jesse Sharps Quintet, plus a longer extended track from Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra! We'll be honest in saying that we'd never heard of Sharps before this CD – but he's ... CD

Wonderful work from a group who are equally great on the funky tip, and on the mellow side of the spectrum – a small southern combo from the mid 70s, but one with a feel that's a lot more like some late 60s funky 45s! The funky cuts are almost all originals here – handled by Earl with ... CD

A killer bit of southern soul from Gwen McCrae – one that's in the best tradition of Miami work of the time, but which also takes Gwen into even deeper territory vocally! The record's got a mature depth that we totally love – a quality that shows the key "adult" transitions ... CD
