Shirelles Sing The Golden Oldies/Spontaneous Combustion

CD (Item 514731) Scepter/Ace (UK), 1964/1967 — Condition: New Copy

The final couple of Scepter LPs by The Shirelles – 1964's Sings The Golden Oldies and 1967's Spontaneous Combustion – back-to-back with a pair of bonus tracks! By Golden Oldies, the girls meant tracks from the preceding few years that were recorded for other labels and by other artists – done here as beautifully as you'd hope for! Most of the work's in the classic Shirelles mode, though – and titles include "My Prayer", "I Met Him On A Sunday", "Walkin Along", "Tears On My Pillow", "Hey Baby", and "Church Bells May Ring". Spontaneous Combustion is a killer live set with a sound that's waaaaay rawer than any of their studio albums of the time! The show was recorded live at Columbia University, before a very eager crowd, and put together with the sort of live recording style pioneered by James Brown at the time (but not on his "fake" live LPs). The band is tight, and there's some beautiful sax playing to complement the impeccable vocals! Tracks include "Mama Said", "Boys", "Baby It's You", "Last Minute Miracle", and "I Got You (I Feel Good)". Despite it being a out of the norm for the group, it's one of our favorite albums they ever put out! CD includes 2 bonus tracks: "I Met Him On A Sunday '66" and "Twist And Shout".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
