Amazing Jimmy Smith Trio – Live At The Village Gate
LP (Item 473627) Metro/Verve, 1963 — Condition: Used
A lost bit of work from Jimmy Smith – and one of his most hard-edged sessions from the Verve years! The set was recorded live at the Village Gate in 1963, but was unissued for a number of years – and it features Jimmy really stretching out on the Hammond, almost with an intensity that rivals his early live dates for Blue Note! The group's a stripped down trio – with Quentin Warren on guitar and Billy Hart on drums – and tracks are all nice and long, with plenty of room for Smith to really get things screaming on the Hammond – often with sharper changes and fiercer notes than you'll hear on his more polished Verve studio sides of the time. Titles include "The Champ", "If I Were A Bell", "I Got A Woman", and "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey". (Label has a sticker. Cover has a cutout hole & light wear.) © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
