CD (Item 415248) Light In The Attic, 2006 — Condition: New Copy

A near perfectly-realized batch of psychedelic drone rock from the Black Angels – an Austin, Texas group that openly channels the benchmark psych forbears – all the while displaying the songwriting chops to far outpace any attempt to run them off as a mere nostalgia act! The group unabashedly waves the flag for the Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, plus 60s TX titans 13th Floor Elevators and Bubble Puppy – from the stark, strobe-lit, guitar and organ-steeped sound, to the optical illusory artwork. What makes them one of the best of the accessible modern psychedelic rock acts we've heard lately is their penchant for strong, fully-focused songs within the frayed vernacular – with topical lyrics, to boot – easily rendering them relevant today. It takes a lot for a contemporary rock band – with Texans on vocals who sing like Velvets-era Nico, to float our boat – and these kids pull it off masterfully! Tracks include "Young Men Dead", "The First Vietnamese War", "The Sniper At The Gates Of Heaven", "Black Grease", "Manipulation", "Empire", "Call To Arms" and more.  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
