One of the best British jazz albums of the late 60s we can think of that has remained so hard to find over the years – an early effort from Kenny Wheeler as a leader, out in front of the John Dankworth Orchestra! The set is, you guessed it, inspired by the story of Don Quixote, but it's not at all a belabored, academic conceit – the compositions are an exciting, lyrical jazz evocation of Quixote's quest. Wheeler is on flugelhorn, taking on a number of great solos throughout the set – really wonderful stuff! The John Dankworth Orchestra features a host of Brit jazz heavies– including Dankworth, Tony Robert, Tony Coe and Ray Swinfield on saxes, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, John Spooner on drums, Derek Watkins, Henry Shaw and others on trumpet and Tristan Fray on precusssion.
