CD (Item 392214) Spotlite (UK), 1978 — Condition: New Copy

Way more than just a usual set of Duke Ellington material – thanks to some inventive presentation from pianist Al Haig and bassist Jamil Nasser! Although the group on the album's a quartet – with Art Themen on tenor and Tony Mann on drums – a fair bit of the songs feature long passages that have Nasser stating simple themes and rhythm on bass, followed by fluid work on the keys from Haig – in that expressive and almost experimental mode used often on some of his better 70s recordings, particularly the UK sessions like this. Themen's tenor is great when it appears – more pointed and straight ahead than the rest, but handled with a nicely biting reed – and titles on the session include "Flamingo", "I Got It Bad", "Just Squeeze Me", "Body & Soul", "Lush Life", and "Perdido".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
