In Action (Japanese paper sleeve edition)
CD (Item 602694) Studio 4/SSJ (Japan), 1964 — Condition: New Copy
Brilliant work by JR Monterose – an obscure album cut after his Blue Note date, with backing by a small Iowa combo! The sound is very hip – as sharp-edged and standout as any of JR's other few albums – and the regional setting of the album doesn't dim the fire a bit! The core trio here is led by drummer Joe Abodeely – who most likely set up the whole date – but given the structure of the tunes, it's also clear that JR's tenor is one of the main attractions – and gets plenty of room to stretch out on the album's mid-length tracks. Most tunes are nice and fresh – and titles include "I Should Care", "Waltz For Claire", "That You Are", "Herky Hawks", and "Red Devil".
