Although she began her career as more of a hard soul diva, this LP from the late 70's is a bit of an attempt to turn her into a club diva. The track "Queen Of The Disco" would be the biggest proof of this, but there's also a bunch of nice cuts that have more of a soul feel to them, and the set does include arrangements by David VanDepitt and McKinley Jackson, who do a good job of getting the best out of Ruby. Tracks include "A Change Is Gonna Come", "A Love Feeling", "A Little Fixin Up", and "I Wanna Be Near You". Earl Van Dyke plays keyboards, too! Out Here On My Own
ABC, 1973. Very Good
Fantastic soul from Lamont Dozier – his first LP as a solo artist, and one of the best debuts of the 70s! The record has a quality that's impossible to describe accurately – but it's kind of a post-Motown full-on approach to soul that mixes strings, piano, and that wall of sound groove ... I Hope We Get To Love In Time
ABC, 1977. Sealed
The first solo album from the team of Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr – and a set that's arguably even more soulful than their work together in The 5th Dimension! Rufusized
ABC, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sure, it was a hit – but it's also an excellent batch of jazzy soul, sung by one of the 70's greatest voices, backed by a sweet mellow vibe that's still influencing hip hoppers today. Includes the incredible track "Stop On By", plus the instrumental "Rufusized", "I'm ... LP, Vinyl record album

Flying Start
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good- Gatefold
Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel ... LP, Vinyl record album

Back To The World
Curtom, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Pure genius from Curtis Mayfield – and a record that's got all the righteousness and political power you might guess from the cover! The album burns with a sense of empowerment that's every bit the best strength of Curtom in the 70s – a sublime blend of heavy soul, funky undercurrents, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Goin' For Myself
Sussex, 1972. Very Good
Classic funky groovers from Dennis Coffey – with his hard guitar sound gettin' all fuzzy over some loud drums and funky Sussex production! This one's still very much on the "Scorpio" vibe, when the label was keeping things nice and hard – and before Dennis got a bit hooked ... LP, Vinyl record album
