A bold musical statement from Mal Waldron – one of his strongest efforts from his European time of the 70s, thanks to some great help from strong hornmen on the set! Half the session features Waldron in introspective solo mode, as recorded often at the time – but the rest of the album features work by a bold sextet that includes Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Terumasa Hino on cornet, and Hermann Breuer on trombone. These group tracks are all quite long, and although free at times, have a focus and energy that's not only uncommon for Waldron in the period – but also for Lacy, who wasn't often working in such a style. Terumasa Hino's horn, as usual, is a strongly punctuating force on the set – and group titles include "Minoat", "Sieg Haile", and "A Case Of Plus 4s". Solo numbers include "Anxiety", "Lonely", and "Happiness" – all quite nice numbers, just a bit gentler and more introspective.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A beautiful album by Mal Waldron – recorded in 1960, after the passing of Billie Holiday, and a very loving tribute by Waldron, who was her accompanist for a number of years. The set moves way past the usual "Holiday songbook" mode, and features instead a dark batch of tracks, two ... CD

Incredible early work from Mal Waldron – a trio session, but one with a lot of dark edges! The group features Addison Farmer on bass and Al Heath on drums – and the tracks are played with lots of shades of blue – and a nicely restrained modern edge that still has plenty of the ... CD

A really wonderful album from Mal Waldron – quite different than most of his other records from the 50s, and done with a righteous undercurrent that almost points the way towards the Strata East generation of the 70s! The set's one of Mal's few 50s albums as a leader to feature horns ... CD
