Radames Na Europa – Com Seu Sexteto E Edu

Wonderful work by one of Brazil's first great arrangers of the 20th century! The set features whimsical instrumentals by the sextet of Radames Gnattali – versions of Brazilian standards, turned on their heads with some very odd instrumentation! The tunes feature harmonica, accordion, guitar, and lots of percussion – all dancing together in jagged and playful little grooves that are samba at their roots, but inflected with some hip early 60s instrumental modes too! The blend is great, and very compelling from a hi-fi sort of perspective – sounds that are even more dynamic than usual for a typical Brazilian session of the time, and a great way of localizing modes that were coming into play in the US scene in the late 50s.
