Rising Stars (Case Of Jazz plus rare tracks)
LP (Item 585307) Trunk (UK), 1964 — Condition: New Copy
Incredible work from two of the hippest jazz talents in England during the 60s – trumpeter Shake Keane and pianist Michael Garrick! Keane's a hell of a trumpeter – one with West Indian roots, but an undeniable impact on the London scene – both through his work with Joe Harriott, and alongside Harriott in Garrick's seminal 60s combo. Here, Keane and Garrick work in a few different settings to explore music otherwise unheard from the pair! The core of the set features the completely obscure Case Of Jazz EP – a set of four tracks that have all the angular, exploratory elements of the Garrick Sextet material, but which also swing with a bit straighter soul too – really a wonderful showcase for Shake's trumpet work – blown tightly, and with a real sort of sparkle – easily a sound that should have gotten him the same sort of attention as some of his American contemporaries. Garrick adds in some nice notes on piano, too – sometimes with Monkish tendencies, sometimes with this flowing, open quality that's especially magnetic. Titles from the EP include "Fish Babies", "Regrets", "Sun Maiden", and "Watershute". Next are two rare cuts from a 7" single – the sublime "Bossa Nova Trieste", a killer of a bossa jazz number – and Keane's own "Troubles". The set's completed by two cuts with a moody, exotic feel – "Rising Star" and "Song Of Romance" – both of which feature haunting wordless female vocals! © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
