CD (Item 614417) Columbia/Sony, Late 70s/Early 80s — Condition: New Copy

A massive amount of music – and a hell of a tribute to the tenor sax genius of Dexter Gordon! The pairing of Dex and Columbia Records is a really special one – because it not only represents a great musical growth in Gordon's later years, but also a place that was wonderfully sympathetic to his musical ideas – and which let him take off, and perform in settings he might not have ever reached on other labels! Most of Gordon's music from later years is in a very standard format – long-blown tracks with a rhythm section – usually recorded live, in familiar formats that still sound great, but never show off the full range of Dexter's talents. Yet here, Gordon gets to work in a focused studio setting – often with some of the best peers of his generation – and is also represented on a well-recorded live date back in the US as well. The scope of the music is tremendous – and bringing it together in this one package is especially great, given that there's a lot of bonus material too! Albums include Homecoming, Sophisticated Giant, Manhattan Symphonie, Gotham City, Live At Carnegie Hall, and a disc of Bonus Tracks too!  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
