A really heavily-jamming album from Larry Coryell's Eleventh House group – certainly to be expected, given that the lineup includes John Lee on bass, Mike Mandel on keyboards, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums! The sound has plenty of rock-fusion touches – and Coryell's guitar is searing, with those great fuzzy touches he virtually invented in his early years – just right here for the kind of over-the-top fusion that the group's putting down! Some nice funky undercurrents – and titles include "Nyctaphobia", "That's The Joint", "Struttin With Sunshine", "The Other Side", and "Some Greasy Stuff".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Chicago Theme
CTI/Wounded Bird, 1975. New Copy
One of Hubert Laws' funkiest records for CTI – recorded with a full group funky style that's plenty darn great, and a lot harder-hitting than some of Hubert's more laidback sessions for the label! Arrangements are by Bob James and Laws – working here with a large batch of players who ... CD

Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1980. New Copy
Wonderful sounds from Hubert Laws – and like some of his best CTI work of a few years before, a set that really goes way beyond any easy expectations! There's moments of ambition here that really link the record to Laws' CTI sides – that mix of fuller arrangements and higher-concept ... CD

Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1983. New Copy
Hubert Laws hits an 80s groove here – but the shift doesn't seem to dampen his soul at all! At some points, the rhythms are a bit more pronounced than before – bouncy and funky at points, with a slight nod to the clubs – yet other points still have that soft, airy finish that ... CD

An all-flute album from Frank Wess – a great small combo date that really gets at the lyrical modes in Frank's style! Wess had been playing flute on record for over 20 years by the time of this early 80s date – but there's a really special feeling to the album that brings out some of ... CD

A great pianist with a really bold sound – strong, fresh, and clean – but without any hoke at all! Dave McKenna's certainly not one of the biggest names in 50s piano jazz, but these sides rival the best in the trio format at the time – a set of familiar tunes and a few lesser-know ... CD

RCA (Japan), 1957. New Copy
One of the few Bud Powell sessions cut for RCA, but a brilliantly swinging date that has the pianist working at the height of his powers! There's an edge here that comes through right from the start – an off kilter vibe in both Bud's tone, and even in the way he's vocalizing joyously in the ... CD
