Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers/Elmo Hope Quintet featuring Harold Land
CD (Item 593014) Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1957 — Condition: New Copy
An excellent collection of obscure west coast hardbop material – featuring a side apiece by the artists named in the title! Side one features material by Blakey's Jazz Messengers recorded for Pacific Jazz – most likely for the sessions for the album Ritual (but not issued on that record, right?) The group includes Bill Hardman on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, and Sam Dockery on piano – and the tracks are 2 long jammers that are a perfect example of 1957 Blakey at its best – "Lil T" and "Exhibit A". Side two is even more interesting – as it features a unique group led by Elmo Hope, with Harold Land on tenor, Stu Williamson on trumpet, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass.
