A great little live set from the glory days of the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band – a series of performances from Japan, recorded in 1976, all featuring the ensemble at its best! The double-length nature of the record takes the group even farther than usual – really letting them stretch out with the kind of bold tones and broad colors that made the group so great. Soloists include Bobby Shew on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Gary Foster on alto sax – alongside leaders Lew Tabackin on tenor and flute, and Toshiko Akioshi on piano. Titles include a nicely dancing reading of the classic "Warning: Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health" – plus "Kogun", "Henpecked Old Man", "Tuning Up", "Since Perry/Yet Another Tear", and "Soliloquy".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2 LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good
Very nice, very tight little bossa nova set by Eddie Harris from his early days at Vee Jay! The groove is very open, and Eddie's still at the stage where he can really cut the stuff. His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spring Rain
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
