A 70s soul classic – and the closest that Gil Scott-Heron ever came to having a hit! The album's best known for its anthemic classic "Johannesburg" – one of the first popular tunes to really push the cause of a free South Africa – but the whole album's a winner, filled with some wonderful tunes that have Gil working with pianist Brian Jackson, in a laidback and soulful style that's even more powerful than his early protest poetry work! Apart from "Johannesburg", the album also features the tunes "The Summer of 42", "South Carolina", "Beginnings (First Minute Of A New Day)", "Lovely Day", and "Toast To The People".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

XL, 2014. New Copy
Plenty new here – a wealth of unheard tracks by Gil Scott-Heron – and some of the best music he recorded late in his life! The sides are all remakes of tracks from older 70s albums by Gil – but they're done in these stripped-down styles that usually just feature voice and guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)
Our favorite-ever album from Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that we'd easily rank as one of our favorite soul records of the 70s! The mix of modes is mindblowing right from the start – as Gil's poetry comes into play with his growing talents as a singer, and his warm sensibility for jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mind Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A great little live album – one that's quite different than Gil Scott-Heron's double-length set for Arista – and a set that serves as a key bridge between his early protest work and his emerging vocal sensibility! The set features a fair bit of longer spoken passages – but unlike ... LP, Vinyl record album

The title and cover may seem a bit strange – but they make more sense when you know that The Escorts were all prisoners at the Rahway State Prison in New Jersey, where they were discovered by sweet soul producer George Kerr! Kerr really gave the group a great chance with this album – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Executive Suite 1
Polydor, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
A gem of a full-length set from Executive Suite – a Philly quartet who are probably best known for their singles in the 70s, but who really find a great way to open up here in the course of an expanded album! Some of the tracks are nice and long – done in a two-part style that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

First Minute Of A New Day
Arista/TVT, 1975. New Copy (reissue)
Gil Scott Heron's first album for Arista – very much in the mellow soul jazz work of his legendary album on Strata East! The record features some wonderfully moody jazz backing that really marks a shift in Gil's style – never going too far over the top, but hitting a sweet groove that ... LP, Vinyl record album

The revolutionary soul classic – a benchmark set that that brings together the most essential cuts from Gil Scott-Heron's first 3 albums on Flying Dutchman! Secrets
Arista, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A key crossover set from Gil Scott-Heron – still every bit as political as his earlier work, but with a stronger sense of soul as well! One of the most fantastic albums by the JBs – a masterpiece of funky jamming, tight instrumentation, and that free yet tight style of the James Brown 70s years! Quazar
Arista, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
Tight funky soul from Quazar! This relatively overlooked group is one of the lesse-remembered P-Funk-linked acts of the late 70s – which is a shame, as it's a great little side project from the team of Glenn Goins and Jerome Brailey – and one with a bass and drums-heavy party groove! ... Winter In America
Strata East/TVT, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
A beautiful jazzy classic, and perhaps Gil Scott-Heron's most perfectly realized album ever!
