Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto — Getz/Gilberto (mono & stereo mixes with bonus tracks) ... CD 13.99

A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". (Cover has a bit of wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very groovy! This is one of Cal's great Verve sides from the 60's! As with most of Cal's best, the grooves are a mix of jazz vibes and Latin rhythms – and the whole session's arranged by Oliver Nelson with impeccable skill. Players include Chick Corea, Atilla Zoller, Richard Davis – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, Early 60s. Good+
One of the Jimmy Smith "jam session" Blue Notes, with a large group that includes Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks, and Art Blakey – nearly all of whom take long solos and dig deep to compete with each other. 3 long tracks, "The Sermon", "JOS&quo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Queen Of The Organ
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Classic Shirley Scott – in her best mode of the 60s! Here's the reasons: 1. The group features husband Stanley Turrentine on tenor, adding in some nice extra tones to Shirley's usual trio! 2. The rhythm section is Bob Cranshaw and Otis Finch – surely one of Shirley's best. 3. The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Another Story
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+
One of the last great acoustic sessions before Stanley Turrentine's big electric run of the 70s – a laidback, open-ended session that really paves the way for the energy of his records on CTI – even though none of the players is plugging in at all! The tracks are all nice and long, ... LP, Vinyl record album
