A wonderful testament to the legacy of Malian singer, flute player and group leader Sorry Bamba – documenting his years leading the Kanaga Orchestra Of Mopti throughout the 1970s – and a great, vital release on Thrill Jockey! The region's musical heritage is intergral to Sorry Bamba's music, but it's also relevant and contemporary to its period and ours – with guitar, bass, organ and horns along with more earthy percussion. His style of songs is pretty amazing, too – and often done with a sense of humor that could be easy to overlook to outsiders – but there's no overlooking how great the music is. Beautifully done by Thrill Jockey, compilers Alex Minoff & Ian Eagleson – with input and insight from Sorry Bamba himself. Includes "Yayoroba", "Boro", "Gambari", "Astan Kelly", "Sekou Amadou", "Sayouwe", "Porry", "Aisse", "Bayadjourou" and "Sare Mabo".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The first solo effort from Awa Sangho – a Mali-born, Abdijan-bred singer who's worked previously with other bigger names in African music – and with a few groups as well – but an artist who's definitely got the maturity to make it all on her own! The work has a very special ... CD

A blistering set of Afro-Funk from the 70s – the debut of Ofege, a band of high school students at the time! There's a really trippy sound to the set, as the guitars figure strongly in the groove, and are often recorded with some slightly psychedelic touches – similar to Blo or some of ... CD

Sublime Frequencies, 1970s. New Copy
A very hip collection of Algerian work from the 70s – work that predates some of the more familiar rai from the 80s, served up with a much rougher style overall! The instrumentation here is all tied strongly to the rhythms – horn parts and guitar lines that romp just as much as the ... CD

A seminal bit of seventies soul from Switch, and a record that really helped set the tone for countless others to come in the 80s – no surprise, given that the group's got members from both the DeBarge and Ingram families! There's a warmth here that few others can match – an earnest, ... CD

Every new album from Angela Johnson turns out to be a treasure – but this set may well be one of the best she's done in years – and a really strong step forward for the singer! The music has this full, rich style that almost feels like classic soul at times – not a retro 60s vibe ... CD
