Brass In Hi Fi

4.60 5

One of the excellent albums that Pete Rugolo made away from the company of Stan Kenton, for who he did most of his most famous work. Although the title says "brass", this isn't a loud swinging record in the Billy May sort of way. Instead, Rugolo arranges a haunting set of jazz tracks as showcases for players like Pete and Conte Candoli, Don Fagerquist, John Graas, and Frank Rosolino. The sound has that same dark edge that characterized his work with Kenton and with June Christy, and the track list includes "God Child", "Brass At Work", "Rose For David", and "All The Things You Are". (Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover is great!)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Mercury, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Mid 50s magic from vibist Terry Gibbs – one of his hard to find Mercury sets, a big-ish band date that has Gibbs at the helm of a smallish orchestra with lots of nice horn work to support his solos in the lead! The style's never too overbearing to drown out Terry's rich chromatic tones ... LP, Vinyl record album

Great Guitar Sounds
Mercury/Wing, Mid 50s/1959. Very Good
A great 50s session from guitarist Bill Harris – known for his work in The Clovers, but a great jazz player as well! The sound here is really unique – very different than even his other albums of the time – in that Bill is playing solo acoustic guitar, in a style that's almost ... LP, Vinyl record album

Man Incognito
Blue Note, 1975. Sealed
A monstrous bit of jazz funk from drummer Alphonse Mouzon – spacey tracks in a choppy style that reminds us a bit of some of the best European fusion albums from the period, but with a harder groove overall! Mini Moog and ARP trip out the sound throughout, but the underlying rhythms are nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

CTI, 1974. Sealed
Moody work from one of the most groundbreaking flute players of the 70s – and a real standout in the legendary catalot of CTI Records!
