Puerto Rico All Stars

CD (Item 484394) Pras/Combo, 1976 — Condition: New Copy

A Puerto Rican equivalent of the Fania and Alegre All Stars – and a group that works with equally hard-driving energy! The overall format is mighty tight – a great trumpet and trombone section, perched nicely on heavy rhythms from a group that features Papo Lucas on piano, Tony Sanchez on drums, and Endel Dueno on timbales – all players who really help the album cook nicely, and give things a really solid grounding, no matter what the style of the tunes. The first cut's an instrumental, but most others feature vocals – by singers who include Andy Montanez, Luigi Texidor, and Marvin Santiago – trading off vocals from tune to tune. There's some great jazz inflections from the horn section at times – especially on the album's great instrumental reading of the Miles Davis tune "Budo" – and other titles include "Canto A Puerto Rico", "Changuiri", "A Mi Manera", "Introduccion Puerto Rico All Stars", and "Reunion En La Cima".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
