LP, Vinyl record album

4.60 5

A real breakthrough album for George Duke – one of his earliest for the Epic label, and an album that took him from the space funk underground to the top of the jazz charts! The album's got a great sound that mixes together all of Duke's influences – Latin rhythms, electric keyboard funk, and some of the freer jamming styles he picked up in the Bay Area scene – and he's joined here by strong crossover fusion players like Ndugu Chancler, Raul De Souza, and Stanley Clarke, all of whom help him forge a groove that's nice and tight. Includes the hit title track "Reach For It", plus the cuts "The End", "Diamonds", "Watch Out Baby", "Lemme At It", "Just For You", "Omi", and "Searchin My Mind". (Includes the printed inner sleeve.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Night After Night
Elektra, 1989. Very Good+
Quite a soul-based set from the great George Duke – a set that not only features his strong keyboards, but also a fair bit of vocals from singers Phil Perry, Jeffery Osborne, and James Ingram – all of whom are a great fit for Duke's evolving sound! Duke had worked heavily with singers ... LP, Vinyl record album

Primal George Duke
MPS (Germany), 1966. Near Mint-
Quite possibly the earliest record to ever feature pianist George Duke as a leader – and a set that's very different than his better-known work of the 70s! At first glance, the album appears to be a straight jazz outing, with Duke on acoustic piano – yet as we've come to expect from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most starkly beautiful recordings in Paul Horn's career – with spiritually resonant, almost spine tingling solo flute and some chants, all recorded in the Taj Majal one day in April of 1968! It's really all about the atmosphere, as it would have to be given the location – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Time Exposure
Epic, 1984. Very Good+
A nice funky electric groover from Stanley Clarke's mid 80s R&B years! Time Exposure has a lot of period electro funk in the mix, particularly Clarke's impeccable bass lines, which are heavy throughout! A brilliant mix of 80s fusiony future funk with jazz precision – definitely a funky ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico Hamilton Special
Epic, 1960. Near Mint-
Chico didn't cut too many sides for Epic – but there was a short period, between his stints with Pacific Jazz and Impulse were he did a few sessions with the label. The quintet here is the group with a cellist, in this case Nate Gershman, plus guitar, bass and Charles Lloyd on flute and alto ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hefti was one of the grooviest of the bigger band arrangers during the 50s – and thanks to Basie, and a few well-placed soundtracks, he had the chance to really experiment with some unusual combinations of material that proved to leave him with an incredible legacy. An excellent collection of early work recorded under Johnny Hodges' name in the early years – sessions from 1938 and 1939 that were originally issued on 78s, but presented here in a classic Columbia LP!
