A masterpiece! This is one of David Axelrod's most perfectly realized albums – and it's a brilliant batch of baroque arrangements, jazzy solos, and slightly subtle funky bits! The album contains the much-sampled song "Holy Thursday", but the whole thing has a very similar feel to that track – with lots of sinister strings, rumbling drums, and archly-modern bits of instrumentation. A real killer – and with the cuts "The Smile", "A Dream", "Song Of Innocence", and "The Mental Traveller". William Blake never sounded so funky!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Auction
Decca, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)
One of David Axelrod's oddest records, but still a darn great one! The whole album is sort of a concept album about slavery (hence the title "The Auction"), and it has some spiritual political vocals on a number of tracks – but underneath is the usual great funky instrumentation of ... Heavy Axe
Fantasy, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
Although he's best known for his albums on Capitol, David Axelrod cut this great record for Fantasy during the mid-70s, and it features Cannonball Adderley producing Axelrod's work (instead of the other way around, as on Cannonball's albums from the time). The tracks here are a bit more jazz funk ... LP, Vinyl record album

For The Good Times
Prestige, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
One of Rusty Bryant's last albums for Prestige – recorded in that more-electric mode that graced the label's albums of the year 1973 – but in a style that's still pretty darn nice! The group's still a small combo – with Rusy on tenor and alto, plus with Hank Jones on electric ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Zodiac
Capitol, 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling ... LP, Vinyl record album

Alifa/Superfly (France), 1972. New Copy (reissue)
A lost bit of funky vibes and Fender Rhodes – one of those few records that's as sublime as it is rare – like work by Billy Wooten or Lyman Woodard! The Bobby Hamilton Quintet were an obscure combo from upstate New York – but they've lived on in our hearts (and ears!) with this ... LP, Vinyl record album

Northern Spy, 2014. New Copy
Pretty electric sounds from the Chicago Underground Duo – a set that has Rob Mazurek adding in lots of electronics (even a Game Boy!) to his usual cornet lines, plus some other acoustic elements that work really well with the drums, mbira, and balaphone of Chad Taylor! The record shows an ... LP, Vinyl record album
