CD (Item 494925) Ace (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s -- Condition: New Copy

Soul, blues and rock selected as nuggets spun by Charlie Gillett on his influential Honky Tonk show for Radio London! Gillett's selections of proto rock and r&b from the 50s, to 60s & 70s southern soul & funk, raw and raucous roots rock are uniformly excellent -- seemingly stylistically divergent, but united in the sense of heart and soul. You get 60s soul from Barbara Lynn and others, 50s sounds from Amos Milburn, Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters and more, plus gritty rock from the 50s to the 70s from Dale Hawkins, Graham Parker, and others. Wonderful stuff all around. 25 tracks in all with a nice booklet of notes: "How Far To The Horizon" by Jessie Winchester, "Down On The Farm" by Big Al Downing, "Games People Play" by Joe South, "Susie Q" by Dale Hawkins, "Oh! Baby" by Barbara Lynn, "Honky Tonk (Pt 2) by Bill Doggett, "Soul Makossa" by Manu Dibango and much more.  © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
