An overlooked gem from Airto – recorded after his 70s years on bigger labels, but a set that almost tops all of them in the end! There's a wonderful mix going on here – a blend of rootsy and electric, and Latin and Brazilian – the former clearly from the placement of the record on New York's Montuno label – an imprint that did plenty of great sessions filled with Latin jazz! The shift makes for a fresh one for Airto – still plenty of room to show off his famous percussion impulses, yet in a slightly different way – often grooving in a Latin fusion mode that's a nice maturation from the CTI years. The set's filled with all-star players – including Jorge Dalto on electric piano, Raul De Souza on trombone, Joe Farrell on flute, Alphonso Johnson on bass, and Oscar Castro Neves on keyboards, guitar, and cavaquinho – and the lovely Flora's also on board to sing a bit on the set. Titles include the extended jammer "Tombo", plus "Aqui Se Pede", "Jump", "The Return", "Sin Salida", and "Anatelio".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

CTI, 1973. New Copy Gatefold
One of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of ... CD

We've always loved the music of Paula Morelenbaum, but this time around she's really got something special going on – thanks to keyboards and vocals from the legendary Joao Donato! Most of the tunes in the set are Donato numbers – themselves already a treat, but given a little ... CD
Paulinho Da Viola (1981)
Warner (Brazil), 1981. New Copy
Wonderfully warm work from Paulinho Da Viola – an overlooked gem from the early 80s, and a set that bristles with all the classic energy of his music from the decade before! The overall sound is strongly acoustic – loads of great percussion underneath the guitar and vocals, with only a ... CD
Se Me Chamar O Sorte
Universal (Brazil), 2013. New Copy
Beautiful work from Wilson Das Neves – as mature and poised as his image on the cover, but still filled with the depth and soul we remember from years back! The vocals have this raspy charm that definitely underscores Wilson's years on this planet – and the backings have this warmth ... CD

One of the most compelling albums we've ever heard from Ornette Coleman – and a set that's very different than some of his other work for different labels – particularly his better-known material for Blue Note and Atlantic! The album's got a righteous feel that's right up there in the ... CD

Get Thy Bearings
Royal Potato, 2013. New Copy
There's a gospel tinge to the title here, but the album's easily one of the funkiest we've ever heard from keyboardist Robert Walter and his 20th Congress band – a tight little outing that has the group hitting with a tightness that pushes them even closer to the deep funk underground than in ...
