CD (Item 499172) Suely Mesquita (Brazil), 2009 -- Condition: New Copy

Beautiful work from Suely Mesquita -- one of the most compelling Brazilian singer/songwriters we've heard in years, sounding even more fully formed here than on her great debut from a few years back! The album's got a sensitivity that really comes through right away -- a complexity in the songwriting, yet a simplicity that's very pointed and personal too -- no quick tricks for tricks' sake, nor musical flourishes that have no point -- and instead, the kind of core, basic brilliance that first lit up Brazilian music from the bossa years and beyond -- even though the album itself is light years from bossa nova. Suely's vocals get some really wonderful accompaniment from the acoustic guitar of Joao Gaspar, who underscores the careful inflections of Mesquita beautifully -- shading things with just the right sort of gentle colors -- bringing out the undercurrents of sadness when needed, but in ways that are as understated as Suely's vocals. Language plays a key part of the whole picture, yet in ways that work even if you don't understand Portuguese -- given the inherent poetry of Mesquita's lyrics, and the way they come together. Titles include "Imenso", "Zona E Progresso", "Longe", "On The Rocks", "Catastrofe", "Vira Lixo", "Cancao Brega", "Blues Pra Ryta", and "John Wayne".  © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
