CD (Item 482617) Red (Italy), 1989 — Condition: New Copy
The vibes of Steve Nelson and alto sax of Bobby Watson – a really wonderful combination, given that both players have such an edgey, soulful approach! The tracks here are often quite long – material recorded live at an Italian jazz festival in the late 80s – and that gives the players lots of room to feel out their own sort of space, especially Nelson – whose vibes have that sharply chromatic quality that seems to be inherited directly from Bobby Hutcherson. Steve often sets the tone on the tunes – leaving Watson to slide in with his own bad self a bit later on – and rhythm is wonderful, played by the mighty Curtis Lundy on bass, Donald Brown on piano, and Victor Lewis on drums.
