A somewhat somber set from Wynton Marsalis – the second chapter in his Soul Gestures trilogy, and a ruminative effort that's filled with dark tones and textures! The album builds slowly – trumpet from Wynton and tenor from Todd Williams providing some bluer colors on top of rhythm from Marcus Roberts on piano, Reginald Veal on bass, and Herlin Riley on drums – and despite the supposed southern focus of the record, there's more of a sense of New York cool, echoes of the modernism of Marsalis' earlier albums in the 80s. Titles include "Psalm 26", "Uptown Ruler", "Prayer", "The Burglar", and "Down Home With Homey". (Original pressing.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.
