A beautiful piece of soulful spiritualism! This great Muse album is one of Woody Shaw's strongest seventies LPs, and one of the few that really captures the energy that he had when he first appeared on the scene in the mid 60s. The group is a large ensemble packed with great players like Azar Lawrence, Cecil McBee, and Steve Turre – and the album's filled with great compositions that display Woody's best modernist soul jazz sides, like "Tapscott's Blues" and "Sanyas". The record also includes a reworking of Shaw's "Moontrane", which he recorded with Larry Young on the classic Unity album. (Original pressing in the textured cover.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Baritonist Cecil Payne cut very few albums as a leader – but nearly all of them are great! After a long and successful stint at Verve/MGM, Jimmy retreated to the underground during the mid/late 70s, where he put out a few hard to find releases on smaller labels. This is one of them, issued on his own tiny Mojo label – and it features a relatively straight soul jazz organ set, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles III
Prestige, 1973. Very Good+
Charles Earland – really stretching things out, and sounding great in the process! The album's an important one, as it shows that Earland wasn't just a funky Hammond player leading a small group – but a visionary player who could put together a session with a larger, cosmic concept. ...
